Track UTM Parameters

Find out exactly where your sales come from by adding UTM tags to your links.

UTM parameters are tags you add to the end of a link, like ?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=cpc, to show where a visitor came from. SamCart picks up any UTM tags on the link a buyer uses to reach your checkout and stores them with the order automatically, including on embedded and slide-in checkouts on your own website. So you can see exactly which emails, ads and posts are bringing in sales.

Add UTM tags to your links

Add UTM tags to any link that points to your SamCart checkout or sales page. For example, this link records "email" as the medium and "welcome" as the content:

https://checkout.samcart.com/products/samcart-launch-14-days-free?utm_medium=email&utm_content=welcome

The standard tags are:

  • utm_source: where the traffic comes from, for example facebook or newsletter
  • utm_medium: the type of channel, for example cpc, email or social
  • utm_campaign: the campaign or promotion, for example fall-launch
  • utm_content: which ad or link was clicked, for example hero-button
  • utm_term: keywords, usually for search ads

SamCart captures any other parameters on the link too, including your own custom ones.

Do I need to set anything up in SamCart?

No. SamCart captures UTM tags automatically. You'll still see URL parameter fields under Settings > Tracking & Pixels, but you don't need to fill them in.

See your UTMs on an order

Go to Sell > Orders, open any order and scroll to Attribution. You'll see the order's Source, Medium, Campaign, Content and Term, along with the referring page and any ad the buyer clicked. Click Show all parameters to see everything SamCart captured.

The Traffic Report

The Traffic Report shows how many orders, and how much revenue, came from each of your UTM parameters. Go to Analytics > Traffic to open it.

Use the date picker to look at a specific period, and the dropdown menu to switch between parameters such as source and content. For more, see the Traffic Report article.

Order exports

UTM parameters are included when you export from the Orders page, so you can run your own analysis of which channels generate the most sales.

Send UTMs to your other tools

Your UTM data is included in your webhooks, Zapier and the SamCart API, so you can pass it on to your other marketing tools. These now also include a richer attribution_enhanced object alongside the fields they already sent, so your existing setups keep working.

Affiliate links

You and your affiliates can add UTM tags to your SamCart affiliate links. Any UTM tags are passed through to the affiliate link's destination URL.

If those tags are present when the order is placed, SamCart stores them with the order. Your affiliates can use this to see which emails, social posts and ad campaigns brought in their sales.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do UTMs work on embedded and slide-in checkouts?
A: Yes. SamCart keeps the visitor's tags as they move into an embedded or slide-in checkout on your own website. If your ads link to a different page first, add SamCart's landing page script to that page. See See Where Your Sales Came From.

Q: Can I track my own custom parameters?
A: Yes. Any parameter on the link is captured and shows under Show all parameters on the order.

Q: Why does an order say "Not tagged"?
A: The link the buyer used didn't include that tag, for example because they typed your URL or clicked an untagged link.

Q: What happened to the URL parameter fields in Settings?
A: They're still there, but SamCart captures your UTMs whether or not they're filled in.
