See Where Your Sales Came From

See which ad, email or post brought in each sale, right on the order.

Every SamCart order has an Attribution section that shows where the buyer came from, in plain language: their campaign details, the page that referred them, and any ad they clicked, labelled by platform (for example, Meta ad click). SamCart captures all of this automatically, so there's nothing to set up and no long URLs to decode.

Where to find it

Go to Sell > Orders, open any order and scroll to Attribution.

What each field means

  • Source, Medium, Campaign, Content and Term: the UTM tags on the link the buyer used (utm_source, utm_medium and so on). Not tagged means that link didn't include that tag.
  • Lead Source: the type of channel the buyer came from, such as paid search or email.
  • Ad click: if the buyer clicked an ad, SamCart shows it by platform, for example Meta ad click. Click the copy icon to copy the full click ID.
  • Checkout Type: how the buyer checked out, such as a sales page, an embedded checkout or a slide-in.
  • Referrer: the page the buyer was on before they reached your checkout.

How SamCart captures it

SamCart picks up tracking details whenever they're present in the link a buyer follows to your checkout. That includes embedded and slide-in checkouts on your own website: the visitor's ad and campaign details are kept as they move into the checkout.

You don't need to fill in the URL parameter fields under Settings > Tracking & Pixels. SamCart captures your UTMs whether or not those fields are set.

Sending ads to your own landing page first

If your ads send people to a page on your own website first, with your checkout embedded or opening as a slide-in on another page, add SamCart's landing page script to the page your ads link to. It keeps the visitor's ad and campaign details attached as they move from your site into your checkout, so the sale is credited to the ad that earned it. The script works for both embedded and slide-in checkouts.

  1. Go to Sell > Products and click the share icon next to your product.
  2. Set up your checkout on your site as usual, using the Embed or Slide codes.
  3. In the Embed card, under Sending ads to a different page first? Add this script to that page., click 2. Copy Landing Page Script. Use this same script for slide-in checkouts.
  4. Paste the script into the page your ads link to.

Using attribution data in your other tools

Attribution data is also sent to your webhooks, Zapier and the SamCart API in a new attribution_enhanced object, alongside the fields those tools already received. Nothing existing has changed, so your current setups keep working.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need to set anything up?
A: No. SamCart captures attribution on every checkout automatically. If your ads send people to your own landing page before an embedded or slide-in checkout, add the landing page script (see above).

Q: Why does an order say "Not tagged"?
A: The link the buyer used didn't include that UTM tag, for example because they typed your URL or clicked an untagged link. Add UTM tags to your ad and email links to fill these in.

Q: Does this send anything to Meta?
A: The Attribution section shows what SamCart captured. Tracking from embedded checkouts also helps Meta match sales back to your ads. To report your sales to Meta, see Meta Pixel Tracking.

Q: How do I check that my integrations received the order?
A: Look at the order's Events section. See Check What SamCart Sent to Your Integrations.
